Bill Lee Callahan

Mr. Bill Lee Callahan, age 85 of Senoia, passed away at his home surrounded by family after an extended illness on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Mr. Callahan was born in Meriwether County, Georgia on April 28, 1931. He was preceded in death by his parents, D and Vera Mae Hubbard Callahan; son, Randy Callahan; sister, Grace Johnson. He was a beloved husband of 64 years, father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. After graduating from Woodbury High School, he served in the US Army Signal Corp during the Korean War, and trained fellow troops in the art of battlefield tele-communications at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. After discharge, he returned to work for AT&T, where he had worked prior to being drafted. He retired from AT&T/Southern Bell/Bell South to his farm in Meriwether County, and later to the golf courses of the surrounding counties and his senior golfing buddies. He was a competitor his entire life. First on the track in high school, then the softball fields, bowling alleys, and golf courses that he loved so much. He once said, “Golf is the greatest game ever invented. The only game you can play and be competitive at from the cradle to the grave.” He was inducted into the Griffin/Spalding “Sports Hall of Fame” for his accomplishments on the bowling alley, and competed in the American Bowling Congress’ World Series of Bowling in Flynt, Michigan well into his eighties. He could shoot sub-par golf. Mr. Callahan was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Gay, Georgia. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Celia A. Callahan; son, Robin Lee Callahan and his wife, Robin J.; daughter, Penny Callahan Pfahl and her husband, Bruce; son, Kriss Callahan; grandchildren, Devon Callahan, Victoria Callahan, and Brooks Callahan; several nephews and nieces. Visitation for Mr. Bill L. Callahan will be on Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00am in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Dr. Ron Johnson and Reverend Dennis Elliott will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a contribution to the American Cancer Society, a Charity or Church of your choice, in memory of Mr. Callahan. Pallbearers will be Mark Washington, Eddie Johnson, Robert Anderson, Jerry Hunt, Ray Whatley, and Billy Roberts. He also wants the other members of the Senior Golf Group to sit as a group at the service as honorary pallbearers.
