Carleen Pitts Gold

Mrs. Carleen Pitts Gold, 82, of Pensacola, Florida passed away at her home on April 27, 2010. She was born in Williamson, GA on July 4, 1927 to the late Fred L. Pitts and Estelle Ball Pitts. Carleen was the youngest of eight children and her brothers and sisters are the late Evelyn Shivers, Horace Pitts, Alton “Smokey” Pitts, Ruby Talley, Joe H. Pitts, Martha Cullaro and Jesse Lee “Bud” Pitts. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry Gold. Carleen graduated from Williamson High School in 1944 and then graduated from the Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta in 1947. She did her nurses training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and worked at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. During WWII she was in the nurse’s corp. She worked as a nurse until marriage. She lived in Griffin where all of her children were born and then after her husband’s passing, in 1969, she and her family moved to Naples, FL. She then moved to Siesta Key, FL and then finally to Pensacola, where she lived close to two of her children and grandson. Carleen was full of life, loved to laugh and shared stories with her friends and family. She was gracious, always kept a beautiful home and garden and loved spending time in her pool with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to travel, work in her yard, read, grew beautiful flowers, but the biggest joy in her life was her family who all loved her very much. She was very proud of her southern heritage and was well known for her delicious meals and Christmas candy. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her children: Henry Gold Jr., Carla (David) Hickenbottom, Monica Foxall, and Gina (Gary) Tjersland; grandchildren: Lindsay (John) Gold Johnson, Zachary Foxall, and Colin Henry Gold; great-grandchildren: Mary-Kate Johnson and Brooks Pine Johnson and many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. There will be a visitation at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 at the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Hickenbottom officiating. Following the service at the chapel, there will be a graveside prayer service at Oak Hill Cemetery. She will be laid to rest next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 301 Kelly Dr., Ste 3, Peachtree City, GA 30269 in memory of Carleen Pitts Gold.
