Don Thomas

Mr. Donald F. Thomas, Sr., age 76, of Jackson, passed away on Wednesday evening, May 4, 2011 at his home following a long illness. Mr. Thomas was born on December 1, 1934 in Travelers Rest, South Carolina to the late James Thomas and the late Mary Goodlett Thomas Pickens. He was preceded in death by a son, David Allen Thomas; and a sister, Mary Evelyn Thomas Wooten. He served four years in the United States Navy, after which he attended Southern Technical Institute, where he received a degree in electronics. Following graduation he began a 37 year career with the Federal Aviation Administration in Hampton, as an Electronic Engineer, retiring in 1994. Mr. Thomas was an active member of Rock Springs Congregational Methodist Church where over the years he served on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Stewards, founded the Men of Action Mission Group, served on the Mission Board, and was a faithful choir member and held various other positions. Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Tatterson Thomas; son and his fiancé, Donald Thomas, Jr., and Carol Wallace of Senoia, daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Rick Fitzgerald of Jackson; grandchildren, Christen Thomas of Jackson, Samantha Thomas of Jackson, Ruth Ann Thomas of McDonough, Brett Wallace of Senoia; sister, Jimmie Ruth Hannon of Greenville, South Carolina; sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Jim Landers of Jackson, Janet and Floyd Price of Milner, Larry and Faye Tatterson of High Springs, Florida; nieces and nephews, Mary Ruth and Michael Bischoff of Watkinsville, Georgia, Eddie Wooten of Cayce, South Carolina, Lisa and Leon Couey of Jackson, Laura and Sam Perdichizzi of Jackson, Lindy and Craig Eden of High Springs, Florida, Christy Tatterson of High Springs, Florida, Carla and Ken Sampson of Milner, Kelly and Curt Watson of Zebulon, Lynn and Shane Watson of Locust Grove; several great nieces and great nephews. A Funeral Service for Mr. Don Thomas will be conducted on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Rock Springs Congregational Methodist Church. Dr. Benny Tate and Reverend Stan Daniel will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
