Donald Haskell Conkle Sr

Haskell Conkle was born in Griffin, Georgia on June 13, 1921 and died there on June 15, 2013. His parents, Joseph Pierce and Rosa Connell Conkle, preceded him in death, as did his brother, William Jackson Imes Conkle and his wife of 61 years, Ethel Taylor Conkle. He attended public schools in Griffin and graduated from Spalding High School in 1938. He graduated from Southern College of Pharmacy, now part of Mercer University in 1942. He and Ethel Taylor married in October of 1942, after which Haskell left for World War II. Haskell was a life long, active member of Griffin First United Methodist church where he was a member of the Men's Bible class, served on the Board of Stewards, and served in various leadership roles in the church throughout his life. Haskell served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in England, as a pharmacist. Haskell was active in his community and participated in several civic organizations including a charter member of American Business Club, the Masons Lodge #314 for 60 years, and the Elks. He started Haskell's Prescription Shop from 1951 to 1983, which he owned and operated with his wife. Haskell earned many honors and was recognized as a leader in his community and church. He is survived by his children, Ginger Calloway of Raleigh, NC, Brenda Grimsbo Finley of Griffin, and Donald Haskell Conkle, Jr. of Griffin. Haskell had five grandsons: Robb Grimsbo of Portland, Oregan, Doug Grimsbo of Ukiah, CA, Josh & Melissa Grimsbo of Portland, OR, Nathan and Mary Owen Calloway of Chapel Hill, NC and Jud Conkle of Statesboro, Ga and one granddaughter, Morgan Kearley of Mobile, Alabama. Haskell had three great grand daughters: Aurora and Cypress Grimsbo and Kady Kearley and one great grandson, Wilson Calloway. Memorial services for Haskell will be conducted Wednesday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Richard Lumpkin and Reverend Kevin Barnes will officiate. The family has asked that members of the Mens Bible Class and Ambucs sit in a group at the service. Friends may visit the family after the memorial service in the reception hall of the church.
