Dora Jane Smith

Mrs. Dora Jane Futral Smith, age 75 of Griffin, passed away July 10, 2012 at her residence. Mrs. Smith was born in Griffin, Georgia on May 20, 1937. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Scott Futral, Sr. and Alyce Patterson Futral; brothers, Tom Futral and Charles Futral, Sr. Mrs. Smith graduated from Griffin High School in 1955. Her career in real estate has spanned over 46 years. She earned her Real Estate license in 1963, obtained GRI designation in 1971 and Broker’s license in 1973. From 1963 to 1990 she worked for Searcy & Co, Searcy Murray Realty and soon became a partner in the firm. She opened her own company, Dora Jane Smith, Realtors in 1991. She was a lifetime member of the Heart of GA Board of Realtors. Mrs. Smith was a charter member of the Million Dollar Club and received this award each year until 2004. She was a partner in education with G-S co schools for many years and also was a big supporter and sponsor for local youth rec. sports as well as several area high schools. Mrs. Smith served on the board of Directors of First National Bank in Griffin from1992-2011. She served on the advisory boards for West Central GA Mental Health Facility in Columbus, McIntosh Trail Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse for many years. Mrs. Smith served as president of several organizations which include Little League Auxiliary, Mental Health Assoc., Griffin Jaycettes, 8th Region GA Jaycettes, Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce and Griffin Board of Realtors (2 Terms). Mrs. Smith was a member of the Downtown Council, Goals for Griffin, Unitedway, Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce and past Director, Sesquicentennial Committee celebrating Griffins 150th. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church for 60 years. A member of the Morgan S.S. Class. She was elected to serve on the Board of Deacons and over the years was a member of Building, Finance and Advisory, Youth, and Communion Committees. Mrs. Smith received several awards including Young Women of the year, Realtor of the year, Mildred Rainwater award, Women of the year and Lon Touchstone Small Business of the year. Mrs. Smith was a fun loving, wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She and Wayne loved spending time with her three grandchildren and missing very few events that involved them. Survivors include her loving husband of 55 years, Wayne A. Smith; daughter, Tami Sexton and husband, Kenny; grandchildren, Will Sexton and wife, Stephanie, Clay Sexton, Molly Sexton; brother, W. Scott Futral, Jr. and wife, Mary; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A special heartfelt thank you to her kind caregivers, Teasa, Joyce, Adesia, Akesia, Angel, Millicent, Margaret, Marion, Gevitta, and Vanessa. Visitation for Mrs. Dora Jane Smith will be on Thursday, July 12, 2012 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church. Dr. Bill Hardee and Reverend Will Sexton will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
