Dovie Jones Polk

Mrs. Dovie Mae Jones Polk, age 84, resident of Griffin, Georgia for 77 years and Waynesville for the last 8 years, died May 29, 2008 at Bay View Nursing Home in Nahunta, Georgia. Mrs. Polk was born in Thomaston, Georgia on September 13, 1924. She was the daughter of Emma Lou McCard Jones and Charles W. Jones of Experiment, Georgia. She was a graduate of Griffin High School where she was a star Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball Player. She was an operator for Southern Bell for a number of years where she met Lieutenant Henry Lamar Polk. During their 48 year marriage, they would raise 2 sons and a daughter. In their early years, they, along with their son, William (Bill) Lamar lived at the Georgia State Patrol Post #1 in Griffin, where she became “Post Mom” to many Troopers. She cooked meals for all Troopers assigned to Post #1. She was also a very active Civic leader in Spalding County. Mrs. Polk served on the Lions Club Ladies Auxiliary as President and Vice President for several years. She was an active member of the Sacred Heart PTO and Third Ward PTO. She worked at Griffin-Spalding County Hospital as Payroll and Switchboard Director for a number of years before going to work for Dr. Abe Oslag and then moved to Dr. Ann Stuckey as their office manager for over 30 years. After that time, Mrs. Polk retired from Roses Department Store as Payroll Director. She was a member of Kincaid Methodist Church for 75 years. Mrs. Polk was preceded in death by husband, Lt. Henry Lamar Polk; grandson, William Christian (Chase) Polk and brothers, Oscar Jones, Alton Jones and Lester Jones, all of Griffin. Survivors include son, William (Bill) Lamar Polk of Brunswick, GA; son, Michael (Mike) Stevens of Williamson, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Polk Johnson and Jim Johnson of Waynesville, GA; grandchildren, Brooksie Michelle (Misty) Polk Peppers of Morrow, GA, James Allen Johnson of Long Beach, MS, Hannah Lauren and Jacob (Jake) Lamar Johnson of Waynesville, GA and Michael Stevens and Austin Murray Polk of TX; one great-grandson, Jeffrey Peppers of Morrow, GA; several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Dovie Polk will be conducted at 11:00am on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Kincaid Methodist Church, Experiment, GA. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Griffin, GA. The family will receive friends and family on Friday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be TFC Clay Clark, Retired Ga. State Patrol Troopers and current Ga. State Patrol Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be staff at Bay View Nursing Home and Dr. Clay Lee and staff, Dr. Malcolm Wright and Dr. Turner Rentz.
