Frankie Corley Wood

On May 2, 2014, my Mom, Frankie Corley Wood, after recent heart complications went home to be with her lord. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, my Dad, Richard "Dick" Wood. Mom was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 12, 1927 then moving to Augusta where she met and married my Dad. They moved to Griffin in 1949. She was the long-time manager of The Jo-Ann Shop on North Hill Street, later becoming manager of two additional lady's garment stores in Atlanta. In 1980 she bought Griffin Gallery which flourished under her guidance. After retirement, she volunteered with the Downtown Council of Griffin. She loved walking the streets of Griffin keeping every business owner aware of up-coming events and twisting arms to promote Griffin. She was a charter member of the Griffin Kiwanians and was instrumental in the initial idea of the corn dog stand including the secret recipe which remains a favorite of the Spalding County Fair each year. She was a tireless worker that served the community on numerous committees and boards. Mom was a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Griffin. Next to family and God, my mother’s favorite two things were the First Methodist Church and the Georgia Bulldogs. She has been an active member of the First Methodist Church since our move to Griffin. She was a founder of and served as president of the Georgia Bulldog Club of Griffin and rarely missed a Dawg game in Athens or on the road. She is survived by me and my wife, Rick and Sheron Wood, her brother, George "Bo" Corley and wife Nancy of Charlotte, NC, her sister, Elaine Corley of Decatur, Ga. and her special friend and a member of our family, Ray Barron, also of Griffin. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Matt and Mandi Wood of Zebulon, and Robby and Whitney Freeman of Athens along with three great grandchildren Finley, Mayson and Rob. The celebration of my Mom's life begins with visitation on Monday, May 5th at 10:00 AM at the First Methodist Church of Griffin with services at 11:00. A brief graveside service will follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First Methodist Church of Griffin. My mother was a very special lady and I will miss her dearly. Rick Wood.
