George W. Jones, Jr.

Mr. George W. Jones, Jr., age 74 of Griffin passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Jones was born on July 28, 1935 in Paulding County to the late George Washington Jones and the late Roma Beatrice Strickland Jones. He was preceded in death by brothers, Vernon Jones and Snowden Jones, and sister Nelia Jones Freeman. While in Dallas, Georgia, he worked at Coats and Clarks and later for the city as a police officer. He moved to Griffin in 1961 working as a beef cattle rancher with his father –in-law, C. E. (Tiny) Williams and as a farmer. He worked as a bus driver for the Spalding County School System and in 1969 started his own business, George Jones Appliance Repair Company until 1997 when the business was bought by his son-in-law and daughter, Keith and Debra Howard who continue to operate the business today. In addition he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Griffin and was a volunteer coach for many years with the Spalding County Recreation Department. Mr. Jones was an avid quail hunter, bird dog trainer and had trained several dogs that won at state and national competitive field trials. He was a member of Quail Forever and the National Shoot to Retrieve. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Nina Williams Jones; his daughter, Norma Jones Greenwood (husband, Edward) of Barnesville, Georgia; daughter, Debra Jones Howard (husband, Keith) of Griffin, Georgia; son, Roger William Jones (wife, Kellie) of Ashburn, Georgia; son George Washington Jones, III (wife, Michelle) of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren, Stephen, Maegan, Amanda, Anna, Ashley, Jackson and Jared: brother, John Henry Jones, of Rockmart, Georgia; sisters, MaeBelle Jones Cole, Cleo Jones McMicken, Roma Jones Hulsey, Beatrice Jones Ragsdale, all of Dallas, Georgia and Reba Jones Jenkins of Cartersville, Georgia. He also had several in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. George W. Jones, Jr. will be conducted on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Reverend John Nance will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
