Hallie M. Hatchett

Mrs. Hallie Hatchett was born in Kingston, Georgia on December 27, 1920. Hallie was the oldest of eleven children. And after her parents took in two nephews, she became the oldest of thirteen. In a large family, she learned to work hard and care for others with deep kindness. Though Hallie came from a rural farming background, she and her husband became savvy entrepreneurs. They opened a general store in Milner and eventually moved it to Griffin. They began building rental properties throughout the area. Through it all they were great partners in business and in life. Hallie could never turn off her generous heart. She never spoke ill of anyone. Hallie assisted people in the community by providing credit so they could pay their bills and make sure their children were fed. She and E.T. moved from Rock Springs Church to help found Plainview Baptist Church by donating one of their rental properties to serve as the mission. There she taught Sunday School for many years. Most importantly, Hallie loved her family. Through hard work and smart saving, she and E.T were able to send all three of their children to college as well as assisting with the grandchildren's education. Besides her world famous fried chicken and biscuits, Hallie will be remembered for her feisty attitude and strong will. Even after surviving a broken hip and several bouts with pneumonia, if anyone commented that Hallie was just a little weak, she would quickly retort with a hand on her heart, “No. I’m strong.” And strong she was for ninety-five whole years. The world will miss her dearly. She is survived by her son, Terry Hatchett; daughter, Yvonne Poole and husband, Rick; grandchildren, Richy Hatchett, Brittany Poole, Patrick Poole; great grandchild, Matthew Hatchett; great-great grandchild, Tyler Hatchett; sisters, Geraldine Faulkner, Shirley Stokely, Patricia Chambers; brother, Charles Smith; son-in-law, Tony Newman; several nieces and nephews. And her great niece and loving caretaker, Kim Lenning. Hallie will be greeted in heaven by her parents, Effie Smith and Lillie Loudermilk Smith; husband, Earnest Terrell Hatchett; daughter, Carolyn Newman; sisters Lessie Phinazee, Ruby Thornton, Gladys Harris; brothers, Melvin Smith, E.A. Smith and Cecil Smith. Visitation is Wednesday January 13, 2016 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Dr. Benny Tate will officiate the funeral service January 14, 2016 at 2:00pm at Rock Springs Church in Milner Georgia. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
