Hugh Allen

Mr. Hugh Douglas Allen, age 80 of Sunnyside passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2008. Mr. Allen was born in Munsford, Alabama on October 14, 1927 to the late Lynn Hamilton Allen and the late Pearl Coley Allen. He is preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law, Maybelle and Emmett Helms, sister, Mrs. Sally Phillips, brothers, Ingram Avery Allen, Hubert Melvin Allen, Bennie Allen and Roy Allen; sister-in-law, Nettie Mae Allen and brother-in-law, Jack Corley. Mr. Allen worked many years as a Mechanic with Lowell Bleachery. He and wife, Frances owned and operated Allen Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Company. He was an active member of Devotie Baptist Church. In 2006, he was elected as Deacon Emeritus. He and Frances had a very active Deacon Ministry. They joined the Georgia Baptist Campers on Missions after retiring. In the Campers on Missions, they traveled extensively doing Volunteer Mission work, helping build new churches and often working at the Baptist Children’s Homes. Mr. Allen enjoyed gardening and his beloved pets, Tippy, Muffin and Sissy. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Frances Lewis Allen; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Gene Kent of Sunnyside; grandson, James Douglas Kent of Sunnyside; special nephews, Terry Eugene Lewis of Griffin and Bobby Kenneth Lewis, Jr. of Griffin; sisters, Alice Corley of Cummings, GA, Beatrice Moncrief and her husband, Ed Moncrief of Yatesville, GA; brothers, Hillard Allen of Griffin, Frank Allen and his wife, Diane Allen of Griffin, David Allen and his wife, Joann Allen of Griffin; brother-in-law, Reverend George Phillips of Milner; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services for Mr. Hugh Douglas Allen will be conducted on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 3:00pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Reverend Drew Stephens and Reverend George Phillips will officiate. Interment will follow in Griffin Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit the family Friday evening from 7:00pm until 9:00pm at the funeral home. Serving as Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Devotie Baptist Church.
