Dr. James Boyd Dunaway

Dr. James Boyd Dunaway, age 87, passed away at his home in Griffin, Georgia on November 22, 2013. The youngest of three sons, he was born October 26, 1926 in Selma Alabama, to Ellie Willson and Benjamin Ellis Dunaway. He grew up in nearby Orrville, Alabama. He attended Tulane University and later transferred to Auburn University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. In 1951 Jim was accepted to Emory University School of Medicine where he did his Pediatric Training at Emory-Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Upon completing his Residency, he was commissioned a Captain in the United States Air Force where he served at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi through 1961. Upon completing his Air Force service he moved to Griffin, Georgia where he practiced for the next 38 years. He was a life-time Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Griffin and a life-time member and past President of the Rotary Club of Griffin. Jim also was a former Chief of Staff at Spalding Regional Medical Center. He also was a member of the Spalding County Hospital Authority for over a decade. He was predeceased by his mother and father, and by two brothers, Benjamin Ellis Dunaway, Jr. and Robert Willson Dunaway. He is survived by his wife, Eve Robuck Dunaway, and a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James Boyd Dunaway, Jr. and Lynn Peters Dunaway and their children James and Blair of Griffin, Georgia; a daughter, Diane Dunaway Boles and husband James Sanders Boles, and their daughter Daysha also of Griffin; a daughter Ginny Dunaway Hobbs and husband Michael Dickinson Hobbs, of Atlanta; and their children Evelyn, Ted, and Virginia. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dell Dunaway of Seaford, Delaware; a niece, Evelyn Dunaway Thompson and her husband Bob of Houston, Texas; and nephews John Dunaway of Walnut Creek, California, Bob Dunaway of Seaford, Delaware, and Benjamin Edwin Robuck III and his wife Angela Orler Robuck of Newnan, Georgia. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 24, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Griffin, Georgia and Graveside at Oak Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at his home at 672 Maple Drive. Dr. Bill Hardee is officiating with Conner-Westbury Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to: Stepping Stones, the Children’s Toy Fund at First Baptist Church, or the Salvation Army.
