Mary Francis Doughtie

Mary Frances Hawkins Doughtie, 92, died August 30, 2010, at her residence at The Woods Assisted Living Center of Griffin. Born Mary Frances Hawkins on April 12, 1918, in Norge, Virginia, she was the daughter of Dr. Horace Taylor Hawkins and Francis Bell Hunt Hawkins. Mrs. Doughtie had been a Griffin resident three times over a span of 65 years, from 1945 to 1952, 1958 to 1973 and from 2005 until present. Mrs. Doughtie was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Doughtie, former plant manager of Crompton-Highland and corporate vice president of Crompton Corduroy. They married in 1942 in Waynesboro, Virginia, where they met. She raised three sons: Charles Taylor Doughtie of Griffin; Daniel Hunt Doughtie of Augusta; and the late James Thomas “Tim” Doughtie, Jr. of Waynesboro. She had four grandchildren: James Thomas Doughtie III of Haslet, Texas; Charles “Chad” Edwin Doughtie III and Nathaniel “Nat” Ingle Doughtie both of Griffin; and Benjamin Michael Doughtie of Augusta. She had three great-grandchildren: James Thomas Doughtie IV and Connor Mack-Cartwright Doughtie both of Haslet, Texas; and Ella Rhodes Doughtie of Griffin. She was also survived by two daughters-in-law and two granddaughters-in-law: Christine Lindblom Doughtie of Griffin; Heather Nagel-Doughtie of Augusta; Brandie Leigh Cartwright-Doughtie of Haslet, Texas; and Shannon Ritter Doughtie of Griffin. Mrs. Doughtie grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia. After graduating from Waynesboro High School, she attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina where she received her degree in 1940. While living in Griffin in the 1960’s, she was the first woman to serve on the Vestry of St. George’s Episcopal Church where she was also a member of the Altar and Flower Guilds. She was a former member and board member of the Griffin Utility Club and the Griffin Footlight Players. While in Virginia, she worked for the Waynesboro Public Library, served on the Vestry and Altar Guild of St. John’s Episcopal Church, volunteered as a Rock Fish Gap Travel Counselor and at the Tourist Information Center in Waynesboro. She spent her entire life studying horticulture, history, antiques and art. She was a lifelong conservationist, working to preserve wildlife and wild flowers. A memorial service for Mrs. Doughtie will be held at 11 am, Friday, September 3, 2010 at St. George’s Episcopal Church. A visitation at the church will follow the service. A second memorial service will be held September 20th, at 2pm, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Waynesboro, followed by interment in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in her honor to St. George’s Episcopal Church.
