Nedra H. Gilbert

Nedra Hood Gilbert, age 94, beloved wife of Douglas L. Gilbert, Sr., passed from this world to God on May 11, 2016 after a wonderful and blessed life. She was born on April 30, 1922 to the late Grover and Bruce Hood in Griffin, Georgia. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gilbert is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Gilbert, Sr., her sister, Barnell Pryor Kilmer, and her brother, Emmett “Red” Hood. As a young lady, she attended Griffin High School. In 1944, she met a young man who was on leave from Officer’s Candidate School visiting his hometown of Griffin, and thus began a lifetime of love and partnership. Nedra Hood and Douglas Gilbert were married on December 23, 1944 and began a life together filled with love and adventure. She and Doug enjoyed the military life, living in various military posts over the next twenty years until Doug retired from the military as a Captain in 1956. The family of seven then moved to College Park, Georgia where they lived for over fifty years. Nedra was a “stay at home Mom,” taking various part time jobs as the children allowed! Nedra and Doug were very active in the community, serving as Presidents of the local PTA and Band Parents organizations at various times as the now six children went through the local school systems. But the full time job to which Nedra dedicated her life was taking care of her husband and six children. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her children and her son-in-law and daughters-in-law: Peggy and Jeff Reuschle; Douglas, Jr. and Janna Gilbert; Don and Myra Gilbert; Dennis and Martha Gilbert; David and Vicki Gilbert; and Susie Gilbert; 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is also survived by a wonderful family of nieces and nephews and many friends. Visitation will be at the College Park Methodist Church, 3726 E. Main Street, College Park, GA 30337 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on Monday, May 16, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, 1891 W. McIntosh Road, Griffin, GA 30223. Interment will follow in the veterans section of Oak Hill Cemetery, where Nedra will be laid to rest with her beloved husband.
