T. Roswell Thaxton

Thomas Roswell (Roz) Thaxton of Griffin, GA, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away April 12, 2012 at the age of 89 at Sacred Journey Hospice, McDonough, GA. Roswell was a World War II Veteran having fought in the Battle of the Bulge. During the battle he was injured and after spending nine months in the hospital recovering from his injures, he received an honorable discharged. Among the metals he received at the time of his discharge were the prestigious Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Roswell was a popular salesman for Goode-Nichols Furniture Company where his career span over four decades, having sold furniture to a large population of Griffin residents, many still having furniture in their homes today he sold. He was born in Butts County to Mary Crawford Thaxton and William Thomas Thaxton and at an early age moved to Experiment, GA where he grew up. He graduated from Spalding High School in 1941 and maintained a friendship with his former classmates, attending and enjoying the class reunions into his eighties. He grew up a member of Kincaid Methodist Church, Experiment, Georgia. After marrying he was baptized into the Baptist faith and was a loyal member of The First Baptist Church, Griffins, Georgia for over fifty years. He was a member of the Bramblett-Cheatham Sunday School Class and the XYZ Club. Roswell was also a member of the American Legion Post 15 and just celebrated his 65th year in March. He was also a member of the American Business Club and the Elks Lodge 1207 for over fifty years. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Thaxton and sister Marion Thaxton, his wives Evelyn Hayes Thaxton and Julianne Lindsey Thaxton. He considered himself very blessed having lived through the war a successful career and having two beautiful, wonderful wives and his family. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David R. and Joyce Thaxton, Sr, daughter and son-in-law Judi and Jerry Nesbitt, grandchildren Hayes Callahan, Rome Nesbitt, Mandy Nesbitt, Mary Elizabeth Reynolds, David R. Thaxton, Jr., Emily Thaxton, great-grandchildren Gabrielle, Carmella and Giovanni Santoriello, Alexandra Reynolds, and Blake, Dori and Sophie Thaxton; step-daughters and sons-in-law Jan and Stephen Vinti , Susan and Bryan Byers; step-grandsons Dow Redding and Holt Redding; sister-in-law Louise Lindsey Holley and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the First Baptist Church of Griffin Benevolence Fund, 106 W Taylor St, Griffin, GA 30223, Military Order of the Purple Heart, PO Box 49, Annandale, VA 22003 or Sacred Journey Hospice, 138 Peach Drive, McDonough, GA 30253. A memorial celebrating his life will be held Saturday April 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the chapel at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Friday April 13, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home. Dr. Bill Hardee will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Honors.
