Wally Brown

Mr. Carroll "Wally" Wallace Brown, Jr., 66, of Griffin passed away on July 19, 2013 at his residence. Mr. Brown was born on October 27, 1946 to the late Carroll Wallace Brown, Sr., and the late Annie B. Britt Brown. A 1966 graduate of Griffin High School, Mr. Brown retired after 31 years from the City of Griffin Police Department and 6 and a half years as Chief of Safety and Security from the Griffin-Spalding County School System. He also served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Orchard Hill, a member of the American Legion Griffin Post 0015 as well as a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Phyllis Howse Brown; Children, Jason (Holly) Brown, Julie (Tim) Thurston; Grandchildren, Beth, Ben, Avery, and Haydn; Brother Summey (Deborah) Brown; Brothers-in-law Jerry (Sharon) Howse, John David Howse, Jimmy Howse; Sisters-in-law Marlene Bearden, Lucretia Hunter, Daina Terrell; Mother-in-law Dorothy Poole Kennedy; Father-in-Law Clyde (Marion) Howse; extended family and dear friends. Mr. Brown was an avid wood carver and a member of Flint River Woodcarvers. Other interests included painting, drawing, origami, blacksmithing and chair caning. He was honored as an official historian of Griffin and Spalding County and helped to organize the Griffin Museum located at the Welcome Center, which included many items from his own collection. He enjoyed talking to people about his experiences and the history of the area, which led him to pursue a license in Ham Radio Operation. Visitation for Mr. Wally Brown will be Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Orchard Hill Baptist Church. Reverend Nelson Grist and Reverend Mike Turner will officiate. Interment will follow in the Westwood Gardens with the Marine Corp League providing military honors. The family has asked the active and retired Law Enforcement sit in a group at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in his name toward the building fund of First Baptist Church of Orchard Hill.
