Dr. William Russell King Jr.

Dr. William Russell King, Jr., age 96, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at his residence. Dr. King was born in Crawford, Georgia on April 26, 1917 to the late William Russell King, Sr. and the late Emilee Crawford King. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mariella Wylly King; brothers, Dr. Harry Crawford King and Dr. John Lamar King. Dr. King received his BS and MD degree from Emory University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II. Dr. King was extremely active in his community and was recognized for his service and leadership. He was voted as the 2012 Man of the Year and received The Life Member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board of Griffin award. He was also a member of several organizations and served in many leadership roles which included the Emory National Council of Medicine, Methodist Children’s Home of Decatur, Spalding Hospital Trust, President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, board member of First National Bank of Griffin, Chairman of United Fund Drive, President of Georgia Surgical Society, President of Spalding County Hospital Authority, board member of Emory National Council of Medicine, President of Spalding County Medical Society, Chairman of the Spalding County Hospital Staff, member of the American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, and The Board of Stewards and Trustees for the First United Methodist Church. Dr. King is survived by his daughter Robyn King Bolton and partner, Danna M. Ogletree; son Wylly Russell King and wife, Karen K. King; granddaughter, Brooke Bolton Stortz and husband Dr. Jeffery S. Stortz and their children, Mariella Roper Stortz and Emilee Bolton Stortz; grandson, Russell David Bolton and wife Susan M. Bolton; granddaughter Kelly King Widner and husband Russell Widner; grandson Thomas Wylly King; several nieces and nephews. A celebration service for Dr. William Russell King, Jr. will be conducted on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 4PM at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend Kevin Lobello, Dr. Bruce Morgan and Reverend Dan Brown will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Christian Enrichment Center, 1401 Maple Drive Griffin, GA. 30224, Stepping Stones, 141 Futral Road, Griffin, GA 30224, Salvation Army, 725 Meriwether Street, Griffin, GA 30224 or to Midway United Methodist Church, 21517 High Falls Road, Griffin, GA 30223 in memory of Dr. King.
