Deane F. Laird

Deane Farrar Laird, born November 26, 1921, to Cecil and Grace Laird in London, Ohio, went to be in the presence of the Lord April 22, 2012 with his family around him. Deane loved His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his wife Betty, his family, and his country. Deane and Betty were married over 61 years. They were best friends and have five children. Faith and family were the foundation of Deane’s life. He was active in Capital View Methodist Church, First Methodist of Thomaston and Griffin First Methodist. Deane had a passion for Missions. He went to Africa on several mission trips. He and Betty hosted missionaries in their homes and supported many through prayer and finances. He served on the board of World Wide Discipleship Association for many years. They hosted a youth Bible study in their home for over 10 years that made impact not only in their family’s life but in many young people’s life. Deane served his country in World War II and in the Korean War as a captain in the Air Force. He was a bombardier in the B-24 and B-29. This was when he developed a love for flying. After the service he joined his father-in-law, Joe Spinks in working and eventually owning Spinks Scale Company. He was active in the National Scales Men Association. Deane’s greatest joy was his wife and family. He also loved the land. For most of his life he owned horses and had several ranches. He raised horses, cattle and chickens. He enjoyed hunting and fishing gardening and flying. He loved to entertain and having folks over. He is survived by his wife Betty and his brother Bill Laird, His five children and their spouses; Jennifer and Steve Galloway, Joe and Stuart Laird, David and Wendy Laird, Becky and Danny Pitts, and Mary and Jim Esden. His 18 grandchildren: Katie Newman, Sara and Lindsey Boney, Laura and Jarod Jones, Nathan, Tanner, Trevor and Kaycee Laird, Matthew, Callie, Meghan, Andrew, Jessie and Shannon Pitts, Zack, Grace, and Jon Esden, Jonah and Rai Laird. His 7 great grand children: Rylie Newman, Quinn, Caroline, and Connor Boney, Grayson, Piper, and Parker Jones. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Campus Crusade for Christ, Worldwide Discipleship Association or the Mission fund of First United Methodist Church of Griffin, Ga. A memorial service will be held on May 5th at 1:00pm at First United Methodist Church in Griffin, Ga. Visitation following the service.
