Donald Richard Shockley

Donald Richard Shockley, age 72, passed away January 19, 2008 at The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia after suffering a massive stroke. Mr. Shockley was born May 31, 1935 in Jefferson City, Tennessee to the late Dexter and Edna Faye Shockley. He graduated from Jefferson High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy and went on to earn his Bachelor?s Degree from Carson Newman College and later earned his Master?s Degree from Fordham University. He worked as both a junior high and high school teacher/coach at Brainerd Junior High School and Chattanooga City High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee before beginning a new career as a Federal Probation and Parole Officer in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he served as a Station Manager/Safety Officer in Panama City, Florida and then returned to his first love, which was teaching, at South Junior High School in Winchester, Tennessee. He retired again at the age of 62 and spent his retirement traveling with his wife, playing golf and spending precious time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Barbara Ailey Shockley and his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Chip Mallett of Griffin, Georgia; his daughter and son-in-law, Deana and Trey Daniels of Richmond, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Sarah and Trey Mallett of Griffin, Georgia and Will and Logan Daniels of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Frances and Gerald Barbee of Jefferson City, Tennessee and Eloise and Frank Breeden of Ooltewah, Tennessee, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. He was lovingly referred to as ?Pappaw? by his grandchildren and all of their friends. Funeral services for Mr. Shockley will be held at Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Tennessee at 12:30 pm on January 26th with the burial immediately following in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The Rev. David Cross will officiate. The family will receive friends at Fieldens Funeral Home in New Market, Tennessee on January 25th between 6:00-9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name for St. George?s Episcopal School at 103 Birch Street in Milner, Georgia.
