Reverend Alvin S. Crews

Reverend Alvin Sylvester Crews, age 99, of Griffin, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Brightmoor Nursing Center. He is survived by his wife of 24½ years, Margaret Baker Crews of Griffin, GA, a daughter, Alva Jean Daniel, Ohatchee, AL, daughter-in-law, June Crews, Sheffield, AL, a son, Joe Crews and wife, Mavis, Weaver, AL, daughter, Sharon Gilliam and husband, Steve, Maryville, TN, daughter, Ruth Kime and husband, Tom, Hodges, SC, son, Steve Floyd and wife Cindy, Hawkinsville, GA, sister-in-law, Mary Crews, Hampton, GA, 22 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great granddaughter and a host of nieces and nephews. Reverend Crews was born in Monroe County on March 15, 1911 to the late Joseph Pickens Crews and the late Willie Mattie Rodgers Crews. He began preaching at 9 years of age, his first pastorate was a Methodist Church. He began pastoring for the Congregational Holiness Church in Fairfax, Alabama in 1948. He continued pastoring 9 more churches until his retirement. Reverend Crews was recently honored for 70 years in ministry. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55½ years, Carrie Imogene Bailey Crews, 18-month old daughter, Eva Joyce Crews, son Rodgers Crews, son-in-law, Robert Daniel, granddaughter Joan Daniel, great granddaughters Brandi Reid and Brittany Coffelt; great grandson, Kevin Hutchinson; great-great grandson, Cadence Coffelt; step son, Mark Floyd, four brothers and six sisters, five brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law. He was a lover of Jesus Christ, family, friends and music and was loved by many in return. Funeral services for Reverend Alvin S. Crews will be conducted on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at West Sunnyside Community Church. Bishop Ronald Wilson, Pastor Hugh Smith and Pastor Barry Jones will officiate. Interment will follow in West Sunnyside Community Church Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Reverend Crews will lie-in-state at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
