Robert (Bob) Lesley Reed Sr.

Mr. Robert (Bob) L. Reed, Sr. age 85, of Griffin, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Brightmoor Nursing Center. Mr. Reed was born in Hon, Arkansas on October 31, 1929. He received his education in Waldron, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington and Era Caskey Reed; brothers, G.W., Bill, John, Jim, and Dean Reed; grandson, Kevin Gazaway. Mr. Reed received Certificates of Achievements in Helicopter Maintenance while serving in the U. S. Army. He received the accommodation medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, VCM, VSM, NDSM with OLC ARCCM with 2 dole Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Reed retired from the U. S. Army September, 1968 as Chief Warrant Officer-Aviation. He received the Commendation Medal with four-oak clusters among other awards. Mr. Reed served in Germany, in Japan as an advisor to the Japanese army, in Laos and Viet Nam. He was with the 1st Calvary Division, 11th Air Assault when President Johnson ordered the 1st Calvary Division to Viet Nam. Mr. Reed retired from the City of Griffin as a Building Official and also served as Zoning Administrator. He was recognized by Governor George Busby for being the first building official to enforce the Georgia State Energy Code for buildings and for his cooperation with architects, home builders, engineers and contractors. Busby commended Reed for his firm but fair administrations. Reed was always concerned for the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Griffin. He showed no favorites and treated all the same. Mr. Reed completed many and various classes at Georgia Center for Continuing Education, University of Georgia to further his knowledge as a building official. Mr. Reed was named Building Official of Georgia in May, 1992 by the Building Officials of the Georgia Association for the highest honor for his professional leadership and outstanding achievements in the field of building code administration and enforcement. Mr. Reed was a member of the Building Association of Georgia for 14 years, six of those years serving on the Association’s Board of Directors. He served as secretary, treasurer, vice-president and president 1988-89. He is held in the highest esteem by his peers, both on state and national levels. He holds a life-time membership in the Association. He was a member of the Southern Building Code Congress for 21 years. Mr. Reed was a former member of First Christian Church of Griffin where he served in many areas. Presently, he was a member of Carver Road Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Jacqueline Kimbrel Reed; sons, Robert Lesley (Les) Reed, Jr. and wife, Brenda Reed of Williamson, Georgia, Brian Dudley Reed of Zebulon, Georgia; great-granddaughter, Brittany Gazaway; brother, Jake Reed, of Waldron, Arkansas; sister, Nell (Paul) Holland of Mansfield, Arkansas; nephews and nieces. Mr. Reed was a loyal, faithful and loving husband and father. Mr. Reed’s family would like to thank Brightmoor Hospice and Nursing Center caregivers and staff for their loving concern and excellent care of Mr. Reed. Visitation for Mr. Robert (Bob) Lesley Reed, Sr. will be on Sunday, May 17 2015 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pastor Tom Summers and Reverend Tom vanLaningham will officiate.
