William C. Cook

Mr. William Crosswell Cook, age 82 of Griffin, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013 at Brightmoor Nursing Center. Mr. Cook was born in Manchester, Georgia on June 15, 1930. He is preceded in death by his parents, Irby and Aileen Crosswell Cook. Mr. Cook joined Troop 28 of the Boy Scouts of America in Manchester in 1942 and became the first Eagle Scout in Meriwether County in 1946.That summer he attended the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. In 1947 he was one of one thousand Scouts from the United States to attend the 6th World Jamboree in Paris, France. Mr. Cook attended South Georgia College and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1952 with a BS degree in Industrial management and Engineering. Having taken R.O.T.C. at Georgia Tech he entered the United States Army in the fall of 1952 and served during the Korean War. He retired in 1954 as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Cook joined the Masons in 1956 and became a Master Mason and attained full membership in the Yaarb Temple in Atlanta in 1960. He was a member of the LaGrange Lion’s Club and served in several positions from 1957 to 1960. He worked in the clothing manufacturing industry as an engineer in Georgia, Alabama and several oversea plants. He moved to Griffin as the Director of Engineering for the Carter Company and retired from the company in 1989. After the children were grown, William and Harriett enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. He was a life-long member of the Baptist faith and was a member of Griffin First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Harriett Cook: children, William Clayton Cook and wife Wendy; Virginia C. Meyer and husband Doug; Col. Benjamin Thomas Cook and Julie C. Richardson and husband Brad; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. William C. Cook will be conducted on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 2:00pm at Griffin First Baptist Church. Dr. Bill Hardee and Reverend Brian McCartney will officiate. Visitation will follow the service in the church parlor. A family interment will be on Friday in the Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Caregivers Ministry, First Baptist Church, 106 West Taylor Street, Griffin, GA 30223 in memory of Mr. Cook.
