William Harold Jones

Mr. William Harold Jones, age 77 of Griffin, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Mr. Jones was born in Cedartown, Georgia on September 1, 1938 to Hoyt and Agnes Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ted Lamar Jones. Mr. Jones graduated from Pepperell High School in Lindale, Georgia and Coosa Valley Tech in Rome, Georgia. He served in the United States Marine Reserves in Rome, Georgia, the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961, stationed at Lakenheath, England and Hamilton Air Force Base in California. Mr. Jones graduated from Air Traffic Control School in January 1958 at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. He worked as an Air Traffic Controller at the Federal Aviation Administration in Hampton, Georgia for 41 years. His greatest accomplishments during his career include training numerous other controllers and working on 9/11 to clear the U.S. air space of all air traffic. Mr. Jones was a member of First Baptist Church of Griffin, served as a deacon, served on the Lord’s Supper committee, Levite Committee, volunteer Office Staff, member of the Sanctuary Choir, and Long Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Spalding Kiwanis Club. Mr. Jones was an avid golfer with the Thursday Morning Golf Group, and enjoyed fishing, especially in Alaska, where he had traveled every year since 1979. He loved to travel, especially cruising. You could find him in Athens in the fall, pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs. Survivors include his wife, Betsy Cain Jones; children and their spouses, Mike and Amy Jones, Julie and Jonathan Smith, Jeff and Jamie McLean, Keith and DeAnn Jones, Beverly and Cecil Bennett and Kim Jones; grandchildren, Madison and Janie Jones, Amanda and Avery McLean, Kyle, Tanner, Bess and Hannah Jones, Rhianna Bennett, CJ and Sarah Bennett, Taylor Wade; great grandchildren, Kailan and Kam Jones; sisters, Lanelle Hines, Annie Walters and husband, Terry; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Steve and Bonnie Brown; several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. William Harold Jones will be Tuesday, July 19, 2016 from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Griffin at 2:00pm. Dr. Bill Hardee and Dr. Hambric Brooks will officiate. Special seating will be provided for the Long Sunday School Class, FAA friends and the Spalding Kiwanis Club. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
