William C."Bill" Stewart

Mr. William C. “Bill” Stewart, age 83 of Griffin, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Spalding Regional Medical Center. Mr. Stewart was born in Gainesville, Georgia on October 6, 1927 to the late Carlton Stewart and Pearl Godfrey Stewart. He was preceded in death by his first wife Daisy West Stewart; sisters, Eunice Coker, Helen Staton, Sarah Henson. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II. Mr. Stewart was past president of Flynt River Daylily Society and Flynt River Iris Society. He was a member of Young at Heart and First Baptist Church of Griffin. Mr. Stewart came to Griffin to open United Television Shop and retired as an instructor of Griffin Technical School. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and growing daylilies. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking and writing poems for his family. Survivors include his wife of 29 years Lucy Payne Stewart; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Carole Stewart of Flower Mound, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Renee and David Blackwell of Germantown, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Kim Stewart of Watkinsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Smith of St. Augustine, FL, daughter, Alyce Payne of Athens, GA, daughter, Elizabeth Payne of Griffin, GA; 12 grandchildren and spouses, Brianne and Kevin Drum of Griffin, Brant and Jenny Stewart of Fort Mill, SC, SGT Phillip and Kym Blackwell of San Clemente, CA, Blaine Stewart and his fiancée Kristen Overson of St. Louis, MO, Megan and Dave Messenger of Ripley, TN, Stephanie and Matt Towe of Winder, GA, Marcy Smith of Port Richey, FL, CPL Stewart and Jennifer Blackwell of Norfolk, VA, Seth Stewart and Kristina Bunker of Athens, GA, Samuel Stewart of Watkinsville, GA, Sarah Stewart of Watkinsville, Sawyer Stewart of Watkinsville; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret and Willard Wood of Bonaire, Eloise Baxter and June Baker of Gainesville, GA; several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. Bill Stewart will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 2:00pm in the chapel of Conner-Westbury. Reverend Kevin Lobello, Reverend Dave Messenger and Reverend Brian McCartney will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor Ken Bell, officiating.
